The Power of Consistency

I shouldn’t be writing this. Really. If I had any sense, I wouldn’t be writing this. I wouldn’t be writing anything. Why? Because it’s late at night on Sunday, and I have an early flight tomorrow morning. So I shouldn’t be writing. I should be in bed asleep.

So why am I writing this article, and what does it mean to you?

I’m writing this article because I made an agreement with myself—a commitment. The agreement is that I write my articles on Sunday. And so here I am, sitting at the computer, instead of sleeping in bed.

Now, could I have waited a day? Sure. Could I have even skipped this week? Yep. My guess is that if I had skipped writing an article this week, the sun would have continued to rise. I can’t prove this, of course, but I just have a feeling.

But here’s the thing. If I skipped a day—or a week—it would make it that much easier to skip another day, or another week. And that violates one of the cardinal rules of business—one that I see being violated all the time. And that rule is:

Consistency beats irregularity.

Consistency beats irregularity. Or, as my friend, business growth expert Mark LeBlanc puts it, “What you do every day beats what you do once in awhile.”

One of the things that Mark taught me was to make one business development phone call a day, five days a week. If I want to make more than one call, that’s fine. If I want to make calls seven days a week, that’s fine too. But I have to make at least one business development call every day, five days a week.

One call a day. That may not sound like much. But it’s not the number of calls; it’s the “every day” part that makes the difference.

What do you do on a consistent basis in your business? What do you do every day, or every week, without fail? Even if you have an early fight the next morning?

By the way, if you came up blank on those questions, you need to give this next question some serious thought:

What could you be doing every day, or every week, without fail? What one, two, or three things, done consistently, would move the needles in your business?

Consistency beats irregularity. (And trust me, if you’ve ever suffered from irregularity, you know that it’s no picnic!)

Yes, I’ll get a little less sleep tonight. That’s the price, sometimes, of commitment. But tomorrow I’ll be on that airplane.

And when I land, I’ll make my business development phone call. Because I made a commitment.

How about you?
